Heme temporarily reduces daily rhythms in the brain's internal clock area of mice
Updated
Abstract
Ferric heme (hemin) at concentrations of 3-100 microM dampened luminescence rhythms in mouse SCN explants expressing a PER2::LUCIFERASE fusion protein.
- Heme may modulate the function of feedback loop components within the circadian system.
- Inhibitors of heme oxygenases produced effects similar to heme on PER2 rhythms.
- Heme's effects on luminescence rhythms were specific to certain tissues, with no significant impact observed in thymus and esophagus explants.
- The degradation products of heme likely do not contribute to its effects on circadian rhythms.
- Inhibition of heme synthesis lengthened the circadian period of SCN PER2::LUC rhythms by approximately one hour.
