Adding chlorogenic acid to a high-fat diet in mice is linked to insulin resistance and fat buildup in the liver

Updated

Abstract

Supplementation with chlorogenic acid (CGA) did not reduce body weight in mice on a high-fat diet.

  • CGA supplementation increased insulin resistance in high-fat diet mice compared to those on a high-fat diet alone.
  • Phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) decreased significantly with CGA supplementation.
  • CGA also reduced phosphorylation of acetyl carboxylase β (ACCβ), a target of AMPK, in the liver.
  • Mice fed a high-fat diet with CGA exhibited higher liver lipid content and more steatosis than those on a high-fat diet only.
  • CGA may impair fatty acid oxidation in the context of a high-fat diet.
