Using high versus low starting doses of sevoflurane for starting anesthesia by breathing it in

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 11 studies involving 829 participants, high initial concentration sevoflurane was associated with induction times that were typically 24 to 82 seconds faster.

  • High initial concentration sevoflurane may lead to faster loss of the eyelash reflex, with an average difference of 41 seconds.
  • Apnoea occurred more frequently in the high concentration group, with a risk ratio of 3.14.
  • No significant differences were found in the incidence of cough, laryngospasm, breath holding, patient movement, or bradycardia between the two groups.
  • The overall incidence of complications was low across both induction techniques.
  • Findings are based on low-quality evidence and should be interpreted cautiously.
