Herbal medicine Huang-Lian-Jie-Du may ease diabetic stroke by changing gut bacteria-produced short-chain fatty acids

Abstract

Huang-Lian-Jie-Du Decoction (HLJDD) reduced cerebral infarct size and improved neurological function in a rat model of Diabetic Ischemic Stroke.

  • HLJDD treatment improved neurological deficits and alleviated dyslipidemia and nitrative stress.
  • The treatment restored gut microbiota balance and increased levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
  • HLJDD enhanced the integrity of the intestinal barrier while inhibiting activation of the TLR4/NF-κB pathway.
  • Administration of SCFAs replicated the therapeutic benefits observed with HLJDD.
  • Depleting gut microbiota reduced the effectiveness of HLJDD, suggesting its dependence on microbiota.
