Abstract

The protective variant of the IL23R gene is associated with changes in gut microbiome composition in healthy individuals.

  • Healthy individuals with the IL23R protective variant showed an increased abundance of certain beneficial bacteria and greater microbial diversity.
  • Ileal Crohn's disease patients exhibited a significant decrease in beneficial bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, compared to healthy controls.
  • Microbiome samples from inflamed and non-inflamed tissues in Crohn's disease patients displayed high stability within individuals but significant variability between individuals.
  • Calprotectin levels in healthy subjects positively correlated with Proteobacteria abundance and negatively correlated with microbial diversity.
  • Findings suggest that host genetics can influence gut microbiome composition before the onset of Crohn's disease.
