Immune system changes linked to supervised exercise in adults with long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Approximately 5%-30% of long COVID survivors experience persistent symptoms.

  • Long COVID is characterized by fatigue, dyspnea, exercise intolerance, and cognitive impairment.
  • A 6-week supervised exercise program was compared to usual care in adults with long COVID as part of a randomized trial.
  • Five immune system variables showed nominal significance, including two CD8+ T-cell subsets and specific cytokines, but none remained significant after statistical correction.
  • No changes were noted in innate immune populations, and no carryover effects were found.
  • The results suggest that moderate-intensity exercise may be immunologically safe in adults with long COVID.
