Combined effects of lauric acid and L-tryptophan given into the small intestine on blood sugar, blood sugar control hormones, and stomach emptying after meals in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Combined intraduodenal administration of lauric acid and L-tryptophan reduced peak plasma glucose to 9.8 ± 0.5 mmol/l in men with type 2 diabetes.

  • C12+Trp significantly lowered overall plasma glucose compared to control and individual treatments.
  • Gastric emptying was slowed by C12+Trp, which may be a mechanism for glucose reduction.
  • Pre-drink plasma levels of GLP-1, GIP, and CCK increased with C12+Trp administration.
  • No significant effects on insulin or C-peptide levels were observed with any treatment.
  • Postprandial glucose responses were not affected by the treatments.
