Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3 may reduce brain inflammation through gut-brain communication

Abstract

Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3 has been identified as a potent probiotic strain capable of mitigating neuroinflammation.

  • LA3 suppressed LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines in BV-2 microglia more effectively than other strains.
  • In a murine model, LA3 alleviated systemic and neuroinflammation, as well as depressive-like behaviors and cognitive impairment.
  • LA3 restored blood-brain and gut-vascular barrier integrity, indicating a protective effect on neurological health.
  • The probiotic reversed gut microbiota dysbiosis and increased levels of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria.
  • Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels were promoted in both colonic contents and brain by LA3.
  • The anti-inflammatory effects of LA3 are associated with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), as demonstrated by the use of an AHR inhibitor.
