Lactobacillus acidophilus may protect the brain in Parkinson’s-like mice through gut bacteria and GLP-1

Updated

Abstract

Lactobacillus acidophilus treatment improved motor function in mice with Parkinson's disease.

  • LA treatment increased the number of TH+ neurons in the brains of MPTP-induced PD mice.
  • Neuroinflammation was suppressed in mice receiving LA.
  • The gut microbiota was restored in the presence of LA.
  • LA enhanced gut-brain signaling, indicated by elevated levels of colonic GLP-1, FFAR2, and FFAR3.
  • Improved gut barrier integrity was observed in LA-treated mice.
