The majority of brainstem PPG neurons were found to be spontaneously active.

  • GLP-1 receptor activation did not have pre- or postsynaptic effects on PPG neurons.
  • PPG neurons lack GLP-1 receptors and were unresponsive to PYY and ghrelin.
  • Leptin caused a rapid and reversible depolarization of PPG neurons.
  • PPG cells likely serve as second-order neurons receiving direct input from vagal afferent fibers.
  • Both evoked and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents in PPG neurons were primarily glutamatergic.
