Links between the Life's Essential 8 health factors and depression in US adults

Updated

Abstract

Better cardiovascular health (CVH), indicated by a high Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score, is associated with a reduced prevalence of depression among US adults.

  • Moderate CVH is linked to a 55% lower odds of depression compared to low CVH.
  • High CVH is associated with an 79% lower odds of depression than low CVH.
  • All eight metrics of LE8 show a negative association with depression.
  • Nicotine exposure and sleep health are identified as significant contributors to the overall association with depression.
  • Improving CVH through smoking cessation and adequate sleep may help in reducing depression risk.
