Link between Life's Essential 8 health factors and cataracts in US adults

Updated

Abstract

The proportion of cataract participants was 20.6% in the poor cardiovascular health group.

  • An inverse association exists between Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and cataract risk, with each 10-point increase in LE8 score linked to a 14% reduction in risk.
  • Cataract risk was observed to be 14.1%, 18.2%, and 20.6% for individuals in the ideal, intermediate, and poor CVH groups, respectively.
  • Significant associations with cataract risk were found for physical activity, sleep, and blood glucose among the LE8 subitems.
  • Higher CVH, indicated by a greater LE8 score, is associated with a lower likelihood of developing cataracts.
