Nighttime light exposure and breast cancer risk in California teachers

Updated

Abstract

Women living in areas with the highest quintile of outdoor light-at-night exposure estimates have an increased risk of breast cancer (HR = 1.12).

  • Exposure to high levels of outdoor light at night is associated with a 12% increased risk of breast cancer.
  • The increased risk is more pronounced among premenopausal women, with a hazard ratio of 1.34.
  • No significant differences in risk were found based on menopausal status.
  • Findings suggest a potential link between ambient light at night and breast cancer risk.
  • Further research integrating quantitative light exposure measurements is suggested.
