Abstract
Exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) in the blue light spectrum is associated with a 1.47 times higher risk of breast cancer and a 2.05 times higher risk of prostate cancer.
- Participants exposed to the highest levels of outdoor ALAN had a greater likelihood of developing breast cancer compared to those with the lowest exposure.
- A significant association was observed between higher outdoor ALAN exposure and increased risk of prostate cancer.
- Men sleeping in bedrooms with considerable illumination had a higher risk of prostate cancer compared to those sleeping in total darkness.
- In contrast, women exposed to illuminated bedrooms exhibited a slightly lower risk of breast cancer compared to those in complete darkness.
- The study was conducted in a multicase-control framework involving 1,219 breast cancer cases and 623 prostate cancer cases across 11 Spanish regions.
