Nighttime light exposure and risk of depression: a combined analysis of observational studies

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Higher light-at-night exposure was linked to higher odds of depression.

Evidence

This meta-analysis pooled eight observational studies published from 2013 to 2025 and found an odds ratio of 1.224 for depression with higher light-at-night exposure.

Caveat

Because the evidence is observational and moderately to highly heterogeneous, it does not establish causation and includes some small-study uncertainty.
