How light exposure and sleep changes affect the start of melatonin production in dim light

Updated

Abstract

DLMO was delayed significantly after 3 days of a 3-hour delayed sleep-phase.

  • A 3-hour delayed sleep-phase led to a significant delay in dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) compared to normal or advanced sleep phases.
  • The observed DLMO shifts after sleep displacement did not correlate with changes in body temperature, waking-up time, or the duration of the first REM sleep episode.
  • Three days of morning or evening light exposure produced similar shifts in DLMO and were associated with changes in body temperature rhythm, waking-up time, and the duration of the first REM episode.
  • Changes in DLMO following light exposure are indicative of shifts in the circadian pacemaker.
  • Changes in DLMO due to sleep displacement may not be mediated by the circadian pacemaker, questioning the reliability of DLMO as a circadian phase marker during sleep disturbances.
