Links Between Loneliness, Hopelessness, Self-Control, and Problematic Internet Gaming in University Men Who Have Sex with Men

Abstract

The prevalence of internet gaming disorder (IGD) among university students who are men who have sex with men (MSM) is 12.8%.

  • IGD is positively associated with feelings of hopelessness and loneliness.
  • Lower self-control is linked to higher levels of IGD.
  • Hopelessness fully mediates the relationship between self-control and IGD.
  • Loneliness partially mediates the relationship between self-control and IGD, accounting for 28% of the effect.
  • A direct effect from loneliness to IGD was also observed.
