Why Internet gaming disorder is more common in Chinese teenage boys than girls: the role of thinking skills

Updated

Abstract

Adolescent males exhibited a 19.2% prevalence of Internet gaming disorder (IGD), compared to 7.8% in females.

  • Maladaptive cognitions were positively associated with both sex and IGD.
  • The prevalence difference in IGD between males and females was partially explained by maladaptive cognitions.
  • Three specific maladaptive cognition subscales contributed to this difference: perceived overvaluation of gaming rewards, perceived urges to play, and perceived unwillingness to stop playing.
  • The mediation effect sizes for these associations ranged from 35.0% to 60.0%, indicating a substantial impact.
