Thinking and attention problems linked to Internet gaming disorder

Updated

Abstract

Four cognitive factors underlying Internet gaming disorder (IGD) were identified in a systematic review of 29 quantitative studies.

  • Beliefs about game reward value and tangibility are significant cognitive factors associated with IGD.
  • Maladaptive and inflexible rules regarding gaming behavior may contribute to the disorder.
  • An over-reliance on gaming for self-esteem needs is linked to IGD.
  • Gaming is often used as a means of seeking social acceptance among individuals with IGD.
  • IGD-related cognition may be more complex than simply preoccupation with gaming.
