Lack of Dietary Fiber Disturbs Colon Balance and May Increase Anxiety Through Gut-Brain Communication

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In mice, dietary fiber deprivation drove anxiety-like behavior through gut barrier, microbiome, colonic energy, HPA-axis, and brain inflammation changes.

Evidence

Preclinical mouse experiments tested a fiber-deprivation model and a 6-week mannan oligosaccharide intervention at 500 mg/kg across behavior, gut, colon, and brain measures.

Caveat

The findings are from a mouse model, so they do not show that low-fiber diets cause anxiety or that mannan oligosaccharides treat anxiety in humans.
