Effects of dim light at night on heart and metabolism in rats with high blood pressure
Updated
Abstract
Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) for 5 weeks increased systolic blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats.
- A loss of light-dark variability in systolic blood pressure was observed in rats exposed to ALAN.
- Systolic blood pressure showed a gradual increase over the 5-week exposure to ALAN.
- ALAN exposure resulted in higher plasma insulin and hepatic triglyceride levels.
- Increased expression of certain metabolic transcription factors was found in epididymal fat tissue of the ALAN group.
- Decreased expression of these factors was noted in the heart of rats exposed to ALAN.
