Comparing nerve block with sedation versus general anesthesia for recovery after hip fracture surgery in elderly patients

Updated

Abstract

A total of 1086 patients aged 75 and older will be randomized to receive either combined lumbar and sacral plexus block plus sedation or general anesthesia for hip fracture surgery.

  • The primary outcome measured will be postoperative 1-year all-cause mortality.
  • Secondary outcomes include the incidence of postoperative complications and early mobility after surgery.
  • Other secondary outcomes will assess pain scores, postoperative delirium, and length of stay in both intensive care and hospital settings.
  • Cost-effective outcomes and the incidence of adverse events after discharge will also be evaluated.
  • Assessments will occur at multiple stages: preoperative, intraoperative, in-hospital, and post-discharge.
