How glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor drugs may affect blood pressure beyond weight loss

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (RAs) are associated with significant reductions in blood pressure, HbA1c, and body weight in type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment.

  • GLP-1 RAs may lower blood pressure independently of body weight loss, as indicated by mediation meta-analysis.
  • Clinical evidence suggests weak or no correlation between blood pressure reduction and body weight changes.
  • Acute administration of GLP-1 RAs shows inconsistent blood pressure responses, while chronic administration consistently leads to hypotensive effects.
  • Potential mechanisms for blood pressure reduction include increased sodium excretion, reduced angiotensin II activity, and enhanced blood vessel dilation.
  • GLP-1 RAs improve both morning surge and nocturnal hypertension, indicating their potential for treating these specific conditions.
