How Gut Bacteria and the Brain Interact in Mental Health Disorders: Causes and New Treatments
Updated
Abstract
Recent studies indicate that variations in the microbiome are associated with diverse neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia may be influenced by the gut microbiome.
- Microbial substrates, as well as exogenous prebiotics, antibiotics, and probiotics, could modulate these disorders.
- The microbiota-gut-brain axis is proposed as a potential target for the prevention and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Further studies are needed to confirm the clinical efficacy of probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).
