Mirtazapine for stomach side effects of diabetes treatment in older adults

Updated

Abstract

A 72-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes experienced severe gastrointestinal symptoms while on semaglutide.

  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists are associated with gastrointestinal side effects that can limit their use.
  • Persistent nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea significantly affected the patient's quality of life and restricted dose escalation of semaglutide.
  • Initiation of mirtazapine led to significant improvement in gastrointestinal tolerance for the patient.
  • Following mirtazapine treatment, the patient also reported enhanced mood, better sleep, and overall well-being.
  • No adverse effects related to mirtazapine were observed during the treatment period.
