Nano-sized carriers with high Salvianolic acid B improve osteoarthritis treatment by targeting damaged cell parts

Updated

Abstract

Salvianolic acid B nano-assemblies achieved 74.4% drug loading and improved mitochondrial function in chondrocytes.

  • Salvianolic acid B (SaB) binds to PINK1/Parkin proteins, which may stabilize and promote their expression.
  • SaB nano-assemblies are designed to enhance the activation of mitophagy in osteoarthritis chondrocytes.
  • In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that SaB nano-assemblies significantly restore mitochondrial function compared to free SaB.
  • These nano-assemblies may facilitate chondrocyte recovery and slow down osteoarthritis progression.
  • Intra-articular delivery of SaB nano-assemblies could offer a new treatment strategy for osteoarthritis and other joint inflammatory diseases.
