Using Mobile Phone Sensors in Mental Health Research: Identifying Hidden Challenges and Possible Solutions

Updated

Abstract

Sensor data were obtained for 55% of scheduled scans on Android devices and 45% on iOS devices.

  • Battery life decreased from 21.3 hours to 18.8 hours when scanning every 5 minutes, representing a 12% reduction.
  • Most participants perceived the app to have a noticeable impact on their battery life despite the small reduction.
  • Factors influencing acceptability included the purpose of data collection, trust in the data-collecting organization, and concerns about privacy.
  • The study identified both technical challenges and user perspectives regarding passive data collection for mental health research.
