How Morning and Afternoon Exercise Affect Iron Absorption in Athletes

Abstract

Exercise significantly increased interleukin-6 levels by 4.938 pg·mL and hepcidin-25 levels by 0.380 nM after exercise.

  • Hepcidin-25 concentrations increased 0.68 nM from prerun to 3 hours postrun during afternoon trials.
  • Iron absorption was significantly greater at breakfast after morning exercise (0.778%) compared to a rested condition (0.672%).
  • The results suggest a transient mechanism may promote iron absorption immediately following exercise despite increased hepcidin levels.
