Muscle-Protecting Fat Loss in People with Obesity-Related Type 2 Diabetes During 12 Months of Metformin Treatment

Abstract

Fat-mass reduction of ≥5% occurred in 58 out of 166 patients with type 2 diabetes.

  • Lean-mass preservation was observed in 129 out of 166 patients (77.7%).
  • Handgrip strength was preserved in 143 out of 166 patients (86.1%).
  • The complete myoprotective fat-loss phenotype was present in 35 out of 166 patients (21.1%).
  • The myoprotective phenotype varied significantly across treatment groups, with the highest occurrence in the GLP-1 receptor agonist (56.5%) and SGLT2 inhibitor (48.0%) groups.
  • No complete myoprotective phenotype was found in patients treated with sulfonylureas or insulin.
