Brain-protecting effects of GLP-1 receptor drugs in neurodegenerative diseases: A large matched group study

Updated

Abstract

Obese patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists showed a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (RR = 0.627) and other neurodegenerative disorders.

  • The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and vascular dementia was significantly lower in obese patients receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Risk ratios for Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and vascular dementia were 0.627, 0.590, and 0.438, respectively.
  • The reduction in risk for Parkinson's disease was not statistically significant overall but was significant for users of semaglutide (RR = 0.574).
  • Semaglutide consistently demonstrated the most pronounced protective effects across all studied neurodegenerative disorders.
  • A significant reduction in all-cause mortality was observed in patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists (HR = 0.525).
