Nightmares link trauma from COVID-19 frontline work to thoughts of suicide in medical workers

Updated

Abstract

In a sample of 16,220 hospital workers, 13.3% reported suicidal ideation in the past month.

  • COVID-19-related traumatic event exposure is significantly linked to insomnia severity, nightmare frequency, and suicidal ideation.
  • Nightmares, rather than insomnia, depression, or anxiety, are identified as independent risk factors for suicidal ideation.
  • The connection between traumatic event exposure and suicidal ideation is fully mediated by nightmares, with 66.4% of the relationship accounted for by this factor.
