Olmesartan's effects on daily blood pressure vary by time of administration in patients with high blood pressure

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 123 hypertensive patients, bedtime administration of olmesartan led to a 48% reduction in the prevalence of non-dipping blood pressure patterns.

  • Both morning and bedtime doses of olmesartan resulted in similar overall 24-hour blood pressure reductions.
  • Bedtime dosing significantly improved nocturnal blood pressure control compared to morning dosing.
  • The sleep-time relative blood pressure decline was enhanced when olmesartan was taken at bedtime.
  • The improvement in awake/asleep blood pressure ratio suggests a greater dipper pattern associated with bedtime dosing.
  • These findings indicate potential class-related effects of angiotensin-receptor-blockers on blood pressure management.
