Outdoor light at night linked to overweight and obesity in children and teens

Updated

Abstract

Children exposed to higher levels of outdoor light at night (LAN) had larger BMI Z-scores and higher odds of being overweight or obese.

  • Higher outdoor LAN levels were linked to increased BMI Z-scores in school-aged children and adolescents.
  • Children in the third quartile of outdoor LAN exposure had a BMI Z-score increase of β = 0.26.
  • The odds of being overweight or obese were 1.40 times greater for children in higher LAN levels compared to those in the lowest quartile.
  • A notable sex difference was observed, with stronger associations between LAN levels and BMI Z-scores in males.
  • Results were consistent even after adjusting for sleep-related characteristics and other obesogenic factors.
