Oxytocin and progestagens influence uterine muscle contractions during horse pregnancy
Updated
Abstract
In vitro testing of myometrial samples from 33 pregnant mares revealed no spontaneous contractile activity within 180 minutes.
- Oxytocin treatment caused a significant dose-dependent increase in myometrial resting tension.
- The amplitude of myometrial contractions tended to increase while frequency tended to decrease with higher oxytocin concentrations, though not significantly.
- No correlation was found between gestational age and the amplitude or frequency of myometrial contractions.
- Progestagens did not affect the amplitude or frequency of contractions when administered with or without oxytocin or prior to its treatment.
- Findings suggest that progestagens may not play a role in regulating myometrial contractility in vitro, indicating the potential involvement of other hormones.
