Melatonin reduces oxytocin receptor production in uterine muscle cells through protein kinase C signaling

Updated

Abstract

Melatonin significantly inhibits oxytocin receptor mRNA expression in human myometrial cells.

  • The effect of melatonin on oxytocin receptor expression is primarily mediated through the melatonin 2 receptor.
  • Melatonin decreases oxytocin receptor transcripts by suppressing gene transcription rather than promoting transcript degradation.
  • Inhibition of melatonin effects was observed when cells were pretreated with phospholipase C or protein kinase C inhibitors.
  • The findings suggest a regulatory role of melatonin in the expression of oxytocin receptors during late pregnancy.
