Guidelines for Managing GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Around Surgery: Current Practices and Future Options

Updated

Abstract

A response rate of 32% was achieved from 265 active duty anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in the U.S. Military Health System.

  • 54% of respondents reported their primary practice location had a perioperative policy for GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Among those with a policy, 65% indicated that they always adhered to it.
  • The majority (87%) of policies were based on guidance from the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
  • Reported barriers to implementing a system-wide policy included lack of comfort with gastric ultrasound, knowledge gaps, and scheduling conflicts.
  • Inconsistencies in policy adherence across practice locations suggest a need for improved implementation strategies.
