Anesthesiologists’ usual care during surgery when patients take GLP-1 diabetes drugs

The survey garnered a 5.98% response rate, with 1,801 anesthesiologists participating.

  • 97% of respondents were familiar with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists.
  • 81% of anesthesiologists had not personally witnessed complications in patients taking GLP-1 agonists.
  • Perioperative aspiration was identified as the primary concern among anesthesiologists for patients on GLP-1 agonists.
  • 62% reported having some to a lot of experience providing anesthesia to patients using these medications.
  • Most respondents' fasting guidelines were consistent with current American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) practice recommendations.
