Ongoing Fat Tissue Inflammation After Metabolic Recovery Shows How Tirzepatide Affects Immune Response Differently in Tissues

Updated

Abstract

Tirzepatide reduced body weight and adiposity in obese mice while adipose tissue inflammation and fibrosis persisted.

  • Tirzepatide increased energy expenditure and upregulated thermogenic and mitochondrial proteins in brown adipose tissue.
  • Hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance were normalized with tirzepatide treatment.
  • Sustained immune cell infiltration and collagen deposition indicated persistent adipose tissue inflammation and fibrosis despite weight loss.
  • Hepatic inflammation and fibrosis showed substantial improvement following tirzepatide treatment.
  • Tirzepatide suppressed inflammatory gene expression in classically activated macrophages but had no effect on metabolically activated macrophages.
