Tirzepatide’s different effects on body fat, focusing on brown fat as an important target

Updated

Abstract

Tirzepatide treatment in mice led to a trend toward greater loss of visceral and subcutaneous white fat compared to pair-fed controls.

  • Both tirzepatide-treated and pair-fed obese mice experienced similar overall body weight reduction.
  • Glucose tolerance improved in tirzepatide-treated mice, independent of reduced food intake.
  • Tirzepatide reduced the inflammatory status of obese mice, but this was linked to decreased food consumption.
  • Tirzepatide significantly enhanced thermogenic activity in brown adipose tissue and altered its gene expression related to heat production and fat breakdown.
  • White adipose tissues showed changes primarily in lipid metabolism, distinct from the effects seen in brown adipose tissue.
