Plant polysaccharides may improve type 2 diabetes by changing gut bacteria: Systematic review

Abstract

Among the 5733 articles reviewed, 29 were selected, demonstrating that medicinal and food homologous plant polysaccharides (MFHPPs) can significantly lower blood glucose levels in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).

  • MFHPPs can regulate the diversity of intestinal flora in T2DM animal models by decreasing Firmicutes and Proteobacteria while increasing Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteriota.
  • The improvement of T2DM is associated with the modulation of 12 key genera of intestinal bacteria.
  • MFHPPs may enhance short-chain fatty acid levels and influence specific signaling pathways to lower blood glucose levels.
  • They could alleviate T2DM symptoms by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress through modulation of intestinal flora.
  • MFHPPs are involved in various metabolic pathways related to amino acids, carbohydrates, and glutathione.
