Weight Regain After Stopping Weight Loss Medications: A Review and Combined Analysis

Pooled mean weight regain after cessation of approved weight management medications is 7.20%.

  • Seventeen studies involving 3,793 participants reported weight regain after discontinuation of treatment.
  • Cessation arms in comparative studies gained 14.26 percentage points more weight than continuation arms.
  • Weight regain varied by drug class: semaglutide 2.4 mg showed 7.19%, liraglutide 3.0 mg showed 4.83%, and tirzepatide showed 13.04%.
  • Fifteen of the 17 studies were rated high quality, indicating robust findings.
  • Stopping these medications is associated with significant weight regain across various studies and regions.
