Risk of Aspiration Pneumonia After Surgery in Adults Taking GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Medications

Updated

Abstract

In a cohort of 366,476 patients, 1.6% used preoperative glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs).

  • Preoperative GLP-1 RA use was more common among women and patients with obesity and diabetes.
  • The odds of developing postoperative aspiration pneumonia were not significantly different between GLP-1 RA users and nonusers.
  • The adjusted odds ratio for postoperative pneumonia in GLP-1 RA users was 0.78, indicating no significant association.
  • Findings may prompt a reconsideration of guidelines regarding the preoperative management of GLP-1 RAs.
