Abstract
Approximately 14% of pregnancies are affected by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
- GDM is linked to negative outcomes during pregnancy and a significantly higher risk of long-term cardiometabolic diseases.
- Women with a history of GDM have a ten-fold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
- The presence of early postpartum prediabetes may heighten the risk of T2DM in these women.
- Existing prevention strategies, such as lifestyle changes and metformin, have generally demonstrated limited success in preventing diabetes in this population.
