Nutrient Processing and Digestive Hormone Release After Two Types of Weight Loss Surgery: Gastric Bypass vs Sleeve Gastrectomy

Updated

Abstract

The peak glucose appearance rate was 64% higher after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass compared to controls.

  • Postprandial absorption of glucose was faster after both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) compared to controls.
  • The peak glucose appearance rate was 23% higher after SG compared to controls.
  • The peak phenylalanine appearance rate from ingested protein was 118% higher after RYGB, while it was similar between SG patients and controls.
  • After RYGB, there were larger but more transient increases in plasma glucose and amino acids, along with higher secretion of various hormones.
  • Ghrelin levels were lower after SG compared to RYGB and controls, indicating differing hormonal responses between the two surgical procedures.
  • Overall, glucose and protein absorption and hormone secretions differ significantly between SG and RYGB.
