Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass improves blood sugar and fat levels after meals better than Sleeve Gastrectomy in non-diabetic severely obese patients: a short-term follow-up

Updated

Abstract

Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels were lower at 6 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) compared to sleeve gastrectomy (SG).

  • Both RYGB and SG resulted in comparable weight loss and improvement in fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance.
  • Glucose levels after meals were significantly lower in the RYGB group compared to the SG group at both 3 and 6 months.
  • Triglyceride levels after meals were also significantly lower in the RYGB group compared to the SG group at 3 and 6 months.
  • There was no difference in postprandial insulin response between the two surgical procedures.
  • Findings suggest that RYGB may have specific effects on glucose and lipid metabolism due to its malabsorptive characteristics.
