How Eating Carbohydrates or Protein Affects Hormones from Proglucagon in Young Healthy Men

Abstract

Total levels of proglucagon increased significantly during the protein intervention (F(8) = 4.114, p = 0.001).

  • Both high-protein and carbohydrate-rich meals produced similar blood sugar and insulin responses.
  • Total amino acids increased more over time after protein consumption compared to carbohydrates.
  • Glucagon and the major pro-glucagon fragment levels rose significantly during the protein meal.
  • GIP total and GIP total plus levels increased in response to carbohydrate ingestion.
  • No major differences were noted in GLP-1, oxyntomodulin, and glicentin levels between the two meal types, although GLP-2 levels increased later following protein intake.
