Mental health and eye problems linked to use of GLP-1 receptor drugs

Updated

Abstract

Eye disorders were reported more frequently with semaglutide than with liraglutide or dulaglutide, with a relative odds ratio of 2.67.

  • Suicidal ideation was reported disproportionately with semaglutide and liraglutide, with odds ratios of 6.49 and 8.61, respectively, compared to dulaglutide.
  • No causal relationship has been established between GLP-1 receptor agonists and suicidality, but the risk should not be underestimated.
  • Spontaneous signals of suspected adverse reactions were analyzed from the EudraVigilance database for the years 2020-2025.
  • The findings indicate a need for further research and monitoring regarding potential eye disorders associated with semaglutide and liraglutide.
  • Caution is advised when prescribing GLP-1 receptor agonists to patients with vulnerabilities related to eye health and mental health.
