Mental health symptoms linked to use of GLP-1 drugs: a review of medical records

Abstract

Among 226 patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, 73.6% with major depressive disorder remained stable during an average treatment duration of 20.2 months.

  • The most frequently prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonist was semaglutide, used by 73% of patients.
  • Major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder were present in 68.6% and 65.9% of patients, respectively.
  • New-onset major depressive disorder occurred in 9.0% of patients, while generalized anxiety disorder occurred in 8.7%.
  • Adjustment disorder, ADHD, and insomnia emerged in a subset of patients, with ADHD showing the shortest latency to onset of 7.8 months.
  • Rare cases of new-onset alcohol use disorder, trichotillomania, and opioid use disorder were also observed.
