Psyllium husk powder helps manage type 2 diabetes by changing gut bacteria and their metabolism

Updated

Abstract

Plantain shell powder (PHP) significantly enhances blood glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity in T2DM mice.

  • Higher doses of PHP resulted in optimal improvements in blood glucose control and insulin sensitivity.
  • PHP reduced organ damage and helped regulate blood lipid levels and short-chain fatty acid concentrations.
  • The treatment improved the ratio of Bacteroidota to Firmicutes and increased beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroidales and Muribaculaceae.
  • PHP also enhanced key metabolic pathways, including those involved in fatty acid metabolism and signaling.
  • Interactions between beneficial bacteria and metabolic pathways may be associated with improved metabolic function and reduced inflammation.
