How rotating shift work may affect signs of metabolic syndrome and inflammation

Updated

Abstract

Rotating shift workers exhibited a 7030 leucocyte count, compared to 6730 in day workers.

  • Rotating shift work is associated with elevated body mass index (27.1 vs. 26.3).
  • A higher waist-hip ratio (0.95 vs. 0.93) was observed in rotating shift workers.
  • Diastolic blood pressure was increased in rotating shift workers (78 vs. 76 mmHg).
  • Fasting insulin levels were higher in rotating shift workers (65.5 vs. 55.9 pmol L(-1)).
  • Leucocyte count was correlated with rotating shift work, independent of age and other metabolic syndrome factors.
  • The odds ratio for metabolic syndrome in rotating shift workers was 1.51, suggesting a potential increased risk.
